NKUMBA University sports department is contemplating dismissing their entire women volleyball team for what they referred to as gross indiscipline at the Genocide Cup that ended in Rwanda over the weekend.

The university volleyball women team, which is one of the leading teams in the country, secured invitation to the Genocide Cup but refused to return soon after they were eliminated from the Kigali event.

Team coach Tonny Lakony confirmed yesterday that they were due to make public the punishment to be meted out to the girls, who defied their officials’ orders to return to Kampala after they were ejected at the quarterfinal stage.

All, except Cissy Iyogim refused to leave Rwanda until after the last game of the championship, forcing the team officials led by sports tutor Patrick Ssebuliba to return alone. Many of the girls are at the university on bursaries.

On the other hand, the girls who eventually returned on Monday, accused the officials of abandoning them at the championship.

Uganda was also represented by Nemo Stars (men and women), KAVC (men and women) and Sport-S.
