ELDERS in Atiak sub-county in Amuru district are disappointed over the appointment of Betty Bigombe, the district Woman MP, as state minister for water.

The elders said they expected Bigombe to get a full ministerial post.

This was during a meeting with Bigombe and members of several savings and credit cooperative organisations (SACCOS) at the sub-county headquarters on Sunday.

“Bigombe worked hard to mobilise the Acholi to join the NRM party, which enabled President Yoweri Museveni to get more votes from the region in the last elections.

"We thought she would be appointed full Cabinet minister,” said Isaac Opobo, the NRM secretary general of Atiak.

Atiak clan chief Flamingo Oyenga said: “Bigombe did not only fight for Acholi, but for the whole of Uganda. She deserves a Cabinet post.”

Madelena Arach, another elder, said: “Why appoint Bigombe a state minister for water? We have enough water in the region.”

The elders said they would present their grievances to the President.
Bigombe urged the Atiak community to join SACCOS to fight poverty.

“We should embrace programmes such as NAADS and NUSAF so that we end the dependency syndrome,” Bigombe said.
