The Uganda Prisons Service is building three prisons in Pader, Oyam and Dokolo districts to accommodate the increasing number of criminals in the areas. The sh2b project will also be used to reconstruct the dilapidated Patiko prisons in Gulu.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Prisons for rehabilitation, David Nsalasatta, while handing over the rehabilitation contract of Patiko prisons to Roja Uganda construction firm recently.

“I am ready to cancel this contract if the contractor does shoddy work,” Nsalasatta warned.

He called upon local leaders to cooperate with prisons authorities in supervising the work to avoid shoddy work. The project is funded by the Government under the Peace Recovery and Development Plan through the Justice Law and Order Sector.

Nsalasatta said sh506m had been injected in the first phase of the project, which includes rebuilding two wards, one sick-bay, an administration block and a store.

“In the second phase, we will rebuild four wards with a capacity of handling 100 inmates each and drill a borehole among other things. We want to improve the living conditions of inmates so that it becomes easier to rehabilitate them,” Nsalasatta noted.

Patiko prisons, which has about 12 wards, used to accommodate up to 1,000 inmates against its capacity of 600.

Nsalasatta said the new Pader prisons will accommodate 100 inmates, Dokolo 150 and Oyam 350.

He inspected three blocks of housing units for 30 warders and wardresses at Gulu Central Prisons.

The constructor promised to complete part of the construction work on Patiko prisons within four months.
