Otuke district chairman Benson Ogwang was on Monday sworn in together with 15 councillors. Ogwang (NRM) defeated the interim chairperson, Donald Olet of UPC.
He took the oath at a function presided over by the Lira chief magistrate, Gabriel Nyipir at Otuke town council hall. Ogwang called for unity and commitment to work in order to overcome the challenges faced by the district.
He cited poor access to roads, rehabilitation of health units, schools and poor performance in primary schools as some of the challenges.
“We have to deliver services to the people who elected us and this calls for unity,†he said. Ogwang warned politicians against nursing grudges that may hamper the development of the district.
Ogwang’s efforts to appoint the secretaries hit a dead end after the meeting was adjourned abruptly by the newly-elected speaker, John Baptist Ogwal.
The secretaries to the council will be appointed in a meeting rescheduled for today.
