The last funeral rites of six out of the eight Ugandans, whose bodies were retrieved from River Rumula in Sothern Sudan following the Sunday accident, were conducted in Cinia ward in Yumbe town on Friday.

Three of the victims, Yazid Aluma, Ismail Toko and the driver, Sebbi Georiga, were from one family. The other victims; Maimuna Candiru, Taban Gudyia and Ratib Ayimani came from neighbouring families.

They were returning from Juba in South Sudan when their truck got stuck in the seasonal river and was later swept away by a flood at night.

River Rumula flows from the Democratic Republic of Congo and empties its water into River Juba, less than a kilometre from the scene of the accident.

Out of the 28 people who were on the truck, 17 survived, eight died, while three are still unaccounted for.

The funeral services were conducted simultaneously at the different homes of the deceased. Yazid Dopinga, the grandfather of three of the victims, said Aluma and Toko were S.2 and S.3 students respectively and were returning to school from Juba, where they had gone to raise some pocket money.

Geriga, he added, was a social man and pillar of the family. “The family will miss him greatly. He has been taking responsibility of everything that affected the family,” Dopinga said.

Geriga is survived by three wives and 11 children. The eldest, Taban Hamza completed a grade five teachers’ course from Unyama National Teachers’ College in Gulu in January.
