AUTHORITIES in Namayingo district have burnt down 50 illegal fishing nets. The nets which are popularly known as kokota were worth sh25m.
They were burnt at Bumeru, a landing site, during a ceremony that was witnessed by district officials yesterday.
The district fisheries officer, Deogratious Mwogererwa, said the illegal fishing nets were impounded following an operation mounted by the Police and fisheries officials on islands of Yebe, Sigulu, Maninga and Biso early last week.
He said similar operations would be carried out on Lake Victoria to ensure that illegal fishing is reduced or completely wiped out.
