SEVEN people were injured yesterday when a commercial building in Bukoto, a city suburb, collapsed.

The victims, who were in critical condition, were rushed to hospitals.

The Kira Road district Police commander, James Ruhweza, attributed the incident to poor workmanship.

He said the building collapsed at around 5:30pm.

Ruhweza identified the victims as Martin Aliu and his three children; Elijah Tendo, 4, Dina Sanyu, 2 and Martina Aliu.

Sanyu is a pupil of Ntinda care, while Martina goes to Green Hill Academy.

The four victims were buying bread from a Hot Loaf shop at the ill-fated incomplete building.

The other victims were identified as Cathy Nakimuli, 21, a sales person for Walnut Doors that operates a furniture shop at the building and another only identified as Carol.

Nakimuli is admitted at Kadic hospital. Carol was rushed to Life link clinic in Ntinda, but was later transferred to Mulago hospital, where five other victims are admitted.

The police also identified Robert Kisauzi, a chef at Peter Pan Restaurant in the same building, as one of the survivors who emerged from the building unhurt.

Kisauzi said they were helped by a car that parked in front of the building. It held up the debris, giving them an escape route.

The deputy resident district commissioner in charge of Nakawa Division, Monday Kintu, said they would discipline developers who flout the building procedures.

“The Government shall not allow developers who think they will use the influence of ‘godfathers’ to make unlawful building developments that endanger the lives of other people,” Kintu said.

Three cars were trapped in the rubble after the building collapsed. They were Ipsum UAJ 953W, Rav 4 UAA 240U and a Toyota double-cabin UAA 327N belonging to Research to Nourish Africa.

The building, which houses a wine shop, a Hot Loaf confectionary, a furniture shop (Walnut Doors) and a restaurant (Peter Pan), is said to belong to Abdul Kasirye.

The Police is investigating reports that the developer changed engineers at different levels of construction and that he had been barred by authorities from continuing construction.
