Uganda claims Africa netball and Paralympics titles Netball final result: Tanzania 42 Uganda 52
THE She Cranes overcame Tanzania in a tension packed match at Munhuana stadium to claim Uganda’s third gold in the All Africa Games.
The netballers, who were included on the team at the last minute, justified their belated entry for the Games despite undergoing early scares from the Tanzanians.
Although Cranes led 12-8 in the first quarter, they seemed to struggle particularly because of a lack of coordination between centre Halimah Nakacwa, wing attacker Ruth Meme and wing defender Esther Awayo.
There were more concerns when Tanzania rallied to close the gap at 15-17 at half time. Coach Fred Mugerwa was forced into changes and that proved the difference.
“There was a problem with the coordination but we rectified it quite early,†Mugerwa said.
Mugerwa withdrew Nakacwa, shifted Meme from the wing to the centre and threw on Harriet Apako.
Uganda then regained the momentum and won 52-42.
Akullo stars Christine Akullo won Uganda her second gold medal after winning the 100m finals in the Paralympics T-13 category.
The 21-year-old senior six student of St Francis Secondary school in Soroti clung on to win the finals amidst wild celebrations from his counterparts.
It was the third gold medal for Uganda on the track after Annet Negesa’s triumph in the 800m finals.
