Police Wednesday morning deployed heavily at Makerere University to block opposition party (FDC) students from matching to Luzira prison.

The students have vowed to walk to Luzira prison to check on head of the Forum for Democratic Change Women’s League, Ingrid Turinawe who remanded on treason charges.

Nakawa Court Chief Magistrate Charles Sserubuga sent Turinawe on remand late October this year.

Prosecution led by Deborah Itwau alleges that Turinawe, Sam Mugumya and Francis Mwijukye and others still at large between the months of August and October 2011 in the districts of Kampala, Mityana, Hoima, Wakiso and other places in Uganda contrived a plot to overthrow the government.

Mugumya and Mwijukye were charged before the same court and remanded to Luzira prison.

They allegedly convened various meetings in different locations in which they launched riots countrywide until the government would be overthrown.

A person found guilty of treason is liable to death while offence of concealment of treason carries a sentence of life imprisonment.
