THE army yesterday decorated eight senior officers who were recently promoted.

Among them was Brig. Proscovia Nalweyiso, the first woman to rise to the rank of brigadier in Uganda. Nalweyiso has been a colonel.

The colourful ceremony held at the defence ministry headquarters in Mbuya was presided over by Lt. Gen. Ivan Koreta, the deputy chief of defence forces.

Brig. Nalweyiso, a senior presidential advisor who joined the National Resistance Army in 1982, was the third to be decorated among the officers.

Moments earlier, the master of ceremony, army spokesperson, Lt. Col Felix Kulayigye, said: “This is a historic and joyous occasion especially for Brig. Nalweyiso, the first woman in the country to become a brigadier.” The statement drew a thunderous applause from the audience.

A Brigadier is a one-star-general.

Other officials that were decorated are Maj. Gen. Robert Rusoke, Brig. Paul Lokech, contingent commander of the UPDF in Somalia who did not attend the function given his duty station.

Speaking at the ceremony Koreta congratulated the officers upon their promotion but warned them of challenges ahead.

First to be decorated was Rusoke, the Joint Chief of Staff. Others were Brig. Kasita Gowa; Brig. Michael Okiding, Brig. Sam Kawuma, Brig. Moses Rwakitarate, Brig. Jacob Musajaawaza and Brig. John Mateka.

The officers were accompanied by relatives and decorated by their spouses.
