The National Resistance Movement (NRM) vice-chairman for Kampala, Capt. Francis Babu, has urged the Government to provide low-cost housing in Kampala suburbs for low income earners.

Babu was on Tuesday addressing journalists at the Uganda Journalists Association offices at Maria’s Galleria in Kampala.

“There is need to segment housing into low-income, middle income and upper income category,” Babu said.

He said a similar scheme was adopted by the Rwandan government for slum dwellers in Kigali City in order to get rid of informal settlements and improve housing conditions for the urban poor.

Babu, a former mayoral aspirant, also urged Kampala Lord Mayor, Elias Lukwago, to work with the Kampala Capital City Authority executive director, Jennifer Musisi, to improve the status of Kampala city.

Babu said poor management had for long affected service delivery under the old Kampala City Council (KCC).

He said KCC faced a challenge of poor management with politicians meddling in service delivery in the city.

In the recent past, Lukwago had threatened to resign his position, accusing the Government of frustrating his efforts to streamline business in the city.

Babu said inflation and corruption were the serious challenges facing the country.
