The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Daudi Migereko, has said that his ministry will no longer issue land titles to district land boards where land wrangles are rampant.

“Most districts have high cases of land grabbing. Mbale and Tororo have registered the highest cases in the eastern region,” Migereko said.

“Mbale and Tororo have also failed to appoint land board committees because of corruption and politics,” he added.

He said land wrangles are caused by the land boards and the physical planning departments in districts.

The minister observed that they change plot names without consulting each other and allocate land to more than one person.

He made the remarks while opening a five-day training workshop for newly appointed district land board members at Wash and Wills Hotel in Mbale town on Monday.

The participants were from Budaka, Pallisa, Kibuku, Butaleja, Manafwa and Sironko districts.

The workshop was aimed at equipping participants with skills on land management.

He cited cases where plot names were changed in Mbale as the Rugby Stadium or Lorry Park turned into a market area

“Why change space meant for a road into a housing estate. Officers involved will be punished. We will not entertain conflicts because of a few corrupt and greedy people,” Migereko warned.

He instructed the office of the RDCs of Mbale and Tororo to explain why the districts did not have land boards.

Migereko advised the public to survey their land.
