CORONAVIRUS

President Yoweri Museveni has said coronavirus will be defeated if we are serious about the measures being taken against it.

He says when he listened to the experts, he realised it is spread mainly in two ways; sneezing or touching surfaces that could be harbouring the virus and then touching soft parts, which are nose, mouth and the eyes.

He says using the same method of preaching to the public, Uganda was able to defeat the HIV/AIDS and reduce the prevalence from 18% to 6%, saying that is why he was doing the same preaching against coronavirus. He says by telling the people how the virus behaves, he was equipping them to fight it.

Open window
The president said the government had left an open window to cater for Ugandans who were returning from abroad, especially from category one countries, although they would be quarantined. He, however, says this was not effective because some were not cooperative and would escape the quarantine.

He says even the health teams were not organized enough to coordinate the work. He says this prompted the closure of the airport and border points for passengers coming in or getting out of the country.

He says only drivers and turn boys; a total of three people have been accepted to cross the borders with trucks. The same measure applies for cargo planes.

The coronavirus patient
He says the man who was diagnosed with the virus is in hospital under monitoring, appreciating the vigilance of the health workers at the airport. He says all his people have been contacted and fortunately, no one is having any signs of sickness.

Public transport
The President says what is still bothering him is the public transport because people sit together in buses and taxis and could spread the disease if one has it. "if you don't have your ow car, motorcycle or bicycle, stay at home," he says.

He asked managers of public transport not to allow anybody in the bus or taxi if they are sneezing or coughing, saying they should also use temperature monitors in the bus or taxi parks. He says people should was their hands when entering or leaving the parks.

Stay home
For the students, he emphasized that they stay home because it is the only reason schools were closed. They should not be loitering in trading centres where they can pick the virus.

He advised other people to stay home, saying only workplaces should remain open. He says workplaces include factories, hotels and offices. The President says the advantage of these places is that people are known and are easy to monitor.

He emphasized that bars and night clubs were not workplaces and must be closed.
