Be professional, accountants told

Dec 12, 2019

ICPAU has over 3,000 registered members and over 8,000 active students going through the Institute’s examinations scheme at various levels of completion.

The president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) Frederick Kibbedi has counseled accountants to be professional and uphold ethics and integrity virtues to remain competitive in a digitalised world.

"Pay particular attention to becoming professional. It's only our adherence to ethics and integrity that will win us public trust. Digital transformation has indicted many things and professions but human emotional intelligence, ethics, and values cannot be manufactured by a machine," Kibbedi said.

He said scientists have developed an application that interprets the law and software that simply work in different disciplines.

"You may have the qualifications but that simply introduces you to the employer. The ability and skills to do the work are what an employer will retain you for," Kibbedi said.

He was addressing recipients of scholarships awarded by ICPAU to ten beneficiaries to pursue Certified Public Accountants of Uganda qualification in Kampala.

The beneficiaries, six females and four males are fresh university graduates drawn from both public and private universities.

They were selected from 164 applications. The entrants must have obtained either a first-class or second class upper degree. The beneficiaries distinguished themselves as talented individuals.

Kibbedi was optimistic that the program would empower them to nurture their talents and qualify as accountants within the next two years.

The CPA- U qualification builds on the initial professional development acquired at the university and other levels of education to impart professional knowledge, skills, and values.

The scholarship covers the cost of registration, study materials, exemptions/examinations fees, and annual renewal fees. The beneficiaries will commence their studies in January next year and sit their first examinations in May 2020 and complete within two years and a half.

ICPAU is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) as well as being a founder member of the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA).

ICPAU has over 3,000 registered members and over 8,000 active students going through the Institute's examinations scheme at various levels of completion.

In pursuance of functions enshrined in the Accountants Act, ICPAU, issues practising certificates to accountants that would like to offer services to the public, conducts continuous professional education to ensure that members keep up to date with the developments in the profession.

It also sets examinations for the aspiring accountants who will gradually become certified public accountants of Uganda (CPAU) and does whatever is required of the accountancy profession with due regard to the public interest.
