In the buildup, President Yoweri Museveni spent two days in Hoima to drum up support for NRM party's flagbearer Businge.

Museveni said the NRM government has done a lot in Bunyoro, citing the construction of the oil roads, discovery of oil and international airport that is under construction. He said he gets surprised to see people contesting on the oppostion ticket.

Opposition bigwigs were also in the area to campaign for the FDC candidate.

FDC president Patrick Amuriat, Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and Alliance for National Transformation leader Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu addressed a rally at Dwoli Primary School and later in Kitoba sub-county.

The leaders were critical of the President, with Muntu particularly accusing Museveni of not according Bunyoro the attention it deserves.

On Thursday, voting got under way at the various polling stations in the area.

"Voting day has been declared a public holiday in Hoima district to allow the electorate to fully participate in the election," said election observer Citizens' Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU).

By 7.30am, at Boma Polling Station in Hoima Municipality, polling had not started as officials waited for the presence of the five mandatory voters, said CCEDU observers, who are present at polling stations in the district.

Polling delayed to kick off at Hoima Municipal Council Polling station because three ballot books (with 50 ballot papers each) were allegedly missing as per the sequencing.

The Electoral Commission, CCEDU reported, came out to explain that the challenge was in the numbering.

The incident riled up some of the voters, but calm was restored as soon as voting started at 9am.

Hoima has two counties, one municipality, 17 sub-counties and 69 parishes. The election will be conducted at 266 polling stations.
