Former Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder Steven Bengo has announced his retirement from football.

Bengo who was an icon during his days at Sports Club Villa, URA FC and the Uganda Cranes, officially declared his retirement today in Kampala.

The Villa Jogo young academy graduate said his decision to quit football was due to medical reasons.

"I quit football because of medical reason. One day, I went through a medical to join KCCA FC but the tests showed that I had a heart problem and the doctors advised me to quit the profession," Bengo stated

He adds that he felt the doctors at KCCA FC had got wrong results and decided to try other hospitals in Kampala but he still got similar results.

He is currently doing a CAF C beginners course as well as sitting on the technical bench of Uganda Premier League debutants Wakiso Giants FC.

Under his ‘Bengo Steven initiative', he wants to extend support to the needy people especially those in slum areas where he grew up before he rose to the top levels in Ugandan football.

"I grew up in the ghettos, mainly Rubaga Road in Muzana zone, Lungujja Kosovo where I drew the inspiration to start this initiative to extend help to people down there," Bengo said.

He called upon stakeholders willing to contribute something to the initiative to come on board.

"The people who are willing to join me in this charitable work, are highly welcome," Bengo noted.

Similar to that, he has patterned with All-Stars Kampala Association ‘ASKA', an association aiming at improving the lives of footballers who have retired from football but living a miserable life.
