800 delegates confirm attendance of CPC

The one-week conference will be seen as good enough to act as an advert for Uganda since it will attract international delegates.

64TH COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE 2019

KAMPALA - A total of 800 delegates have confirmed their attendance of the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) set for September 22 in Uganda's capital Kampala.

Chris Obore, the director of communications and public affairs at Parliament, has told New Vision that the number is expected to increase as the date for the conference draws near.

"We are still getting more confirmations and by the end of last week, 800 out of the 1,000 expected delegates had confirmed their attendance," he said.

The conference, which will take place at Speke Resort Munyonyo, will last one week (September 22-29).

Obore said preparations for the conference are in high gear.

"Different committees that were set up to organise the conference are working hard to ensure that everything is in place to make this conference a success," Obore (pictured left) said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, who is the host of the conference, established different committees such as accommodation, finance and budget, conference management, protocol and ceremonies, security and accreditation.

Value for money

With over sh16b budgeted for the conference, Obore said there will be value for money. He said the conference will act as a platform for promoting Uganda's tourism potential to the world.

"This conference is going to boost our tourism sector. All the delegates will be paying in dollars for where they will be sleeping. Many have already booked to go and visit various national parks such as Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi."

The conference will also be seen as good enough to act as an advert for Uganda since the event will attract international delegates from countries such as the UK.

Obore said Kadaga, who is the president-designate (2018-2019) of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), is currently rallying members of the Commonwealth countries not to miss the conference.
