Ugandans in the diaspora have been encouraged to pursue long-term development business initiatives and invest back home.

Uganda's ambassador to Rome, Elizabeth Paula Napeyok, says the Government has made huge strides in establishing a conducive atmosphere to enable people invest freely in Uganda.

She made the comments at a business networking forum in Italy's capital Rome.

Napeyok said the Ugandan government recognises the key role people in the diaspora play in the development of the country through remittances, but urged them to not only provide for their families but also venture into big investments.

"I want to encourage you to consider taking the same concept of investments back home to Uganda so that while you are here, you have the option of enjoying the same facilities when you are home," she said.

The forum was themed Doing business in Eastern Africa countries: Opportunities of business with Italian companies.

It was attended by 11 African nations and 200 companies from Italy.

Business representatives and government agencies from Italy and Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Comoros and Burundi attended the forum.

She said it is the right time for Ugandans living in the diaspora to seize business opportunities that Uganda is offering.
