The Police in Kakumiro district is holding a 27-year-old man for allegedly hacking his two sons to death.

Najibu Waiswa the Kakumiro District Police Commander identified the suspect as Leo Twesigye a resident of Muzimu village in Kakayo parish in Kasambya sub-county.

“We have in our custody Leo Twesigye who handed himself to us after killing his two biological sons for fear of being lynched by a mob. We are preparing his file to be sent to the resident state attorney so as to expedite justice. He will have to answer murder charges,” he said.

It is alleged that he committed the tragic act on Wednesday morning at about 5:00 am when he used a machete to slit the throats of his sons Mathias Mwesigwa, 3, and Eremia Niwamanya, 9.

The mother of the boys, Sharon Ninsiima, disclosed that she recently clashed with her husband which forced her to flee the marital home but on returning, she found out that another woman had taken her place.

''All my agricultural produce would be taken from me for fund his alcohol habit and when I complained, it annoyed him,” Ninsima said, adding that Twesigye gave all her property to the new woman.

Ninsiima revealed that on Wednesday morning, Twesigye returned home, picked up a machete and chasing her from the house. She sought refuge at the home of the LC1 chairman Edward Kitaryeba.

The enraged Twesigye then returned to the house and hacked to death his two sons who were asleep at the time.

Ninsiima added that she begged a neighbour identified as Vincent Martin to go to the house and check whether her children were safe, but he found the children lying in a pool of blood with slit throats.

Twesigye then surrendered himself to Kasambya Police Post and claimed that he was forced to commit the alleged crime because of harassment from Ninsiima.

“I only received the sad news about the murder of two children in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. I could not do much since the suspect had already handed himself to the Police,” Kitaryeba said.

The Kakayo parish councillor, John Tugume, attributed the incident to increased domestic violence and failure by the conflicting parties to report their issues to the relevant authorities for a peaceful resolution.

“Their matter would not have escalated to that extent if they had involved the local council officials and the Police. It was a simple matter that should not have led to the gruesome murder of innocent children,” he said.
