Bodaboda killers confess before magistrate

MURDER CRIME
Two men, who were recently arrested by Police in connection to the killing of a boda-boda rider, have recorded a statement in which they have confessed to having murdered their victim.
John Bosco Mugisha alias Mukiga and Patrick Sekyema aka Young Mulo have recorded extra-judicial statements before Mengo Court Grade one magistrate, Esther Nyadoi.
An extra-judicial statement is where an accused confirms before a magistrate having committed the offences he is accused of.
Procedurally, the statement would be presented to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), which he presents to court during the trial, confirming that the accused committed the offence and he willingly confessed.
During the extra-judicial statement, the accused is supposed to be alone with the magistrate, who takes down what the accused confesses without the third party.
Mugisha and Mulo's images were caught on a CCTV camera that was mounted at a nearby primary school where he was seen strangling and hitting Derrick Mulindwa; a boda-boda rider, several times on the head using a piece of metal.
Mugisha grabbed Mulindwa by the neck and choked him while Mulo parked the motorcycle and used the metallic object to hit Mulindwa on the head after pulling off his helmet. They later fled using Mulindwa's motorcycle.
Earlier footage from the same scene showed the two suspects surveying the area and hiding the murder weapon before they wooed Mulindwa.
Police investigations indicate that on June 30, two suspects while posing as passengers hired Mulindwa and when they reached Mengo-Kakyeka in Lubaga division, they stopped and hit Mulindwa with a metal to death.
Footage showing that gruesome murder went viral on social media, leading to the arrest of Mugisha in Ndeeba, who informed Police that Mulo had been killed in another robbery by a mob.
Mugisha told the Police that they had stolen a motorcycle in Mityana on July 2, 2019, and they were traced up to Makindye in Kampala where a mob pounced on them, killing his colleague but he was able to escape and went to his hideout in Kabale.
However, after a few days, Mulo was also arrested by Police from a shrine in Mpigi district, where he had fled after escaping from Mulago Hospital where he had been admitted after the Police rescued him from a mob on July 3.
The suspects have been taken back into police custody, as investigations continue while waiting to be formally charged before a magistrate.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango recently revealed that Mugisha had been arrested several times and had been to Luzira Prison on charges of robbery and theft before.
