That fact wasn't clear to Keturah Namwera. She ventured in piggery simply because her neighbor was doing it. However, since she had little knowledge about it, she made lots of losses and she ended up giving up.

Experts say piggery is very fruitful and rewarding but this can work for people who know how and why they are into piggery farming. Their important things that one needs to do to earn from a piggery.

Invest in a water tank

"In case you get in it simply because others are doing it, you're bound to fail because piggery needs people who are patient, hardworking and ready to take care of the piggery because it takes one to be hardworking to run a piggery," he says.

Invest in good feeding/treatment

"For a pig to grow and bring good yields, one has to invest in feeding it well coupled with subjecting it to good living conditions and treatment incase need arises, "says Sabika.

"Ensure it's vaccinated at the right time and also de-wormed, "he adds.

Let the young ones be separated from big ones

Invest in a water tank

Tony Mubiru another piggery farmer notes that to have your piggery run smoothly you need to have consistent water supply at the farm to ensure they have enough water all the time.

"This can be achieved by investing in an underground water tank where they can be stored to ensure continuous water supply at the farm, "he says.

Invest in good structures

Mubiru notes that for a piggery to do well, one has to plan how the piggery structures are going to be built.

He advises that it's built in a spacious way and also segmented so that pigs and piglets of different ages can be separated to ensure that when food is given; all groups eat to grow at the same pace hence good yields.

Be in charge

Mubiru notes that many times people invest in projects like piggery, poultry and employ people to run and manage the farm. "This is wrong, find time and be at the farm to see how work is being done, asks for accountability and also do things yourself, "he advises.
