INFRASTRUCTURE

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has signed the civil works contract of the 23.7km Busega-Mpigi Expressway with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCEC), giving the firm 36 months to complete the works.

According to Allen Kagina, the Executive Director, Uganda National Roads Authority, the CCEC team is already on ground and about 9km compensation has been settled.

“Out of the23.7km, we have so far fully compensated 9km. We also received a valuation report for 3.7km approved and awaiting funds to pay compensation. This implies that 64% of the right of way is available for the contractor to commence works and there is no impediment for the works to begin,” she said.

The construction works will be financed by a sh547b loan from the African Development Bank (ADB).

“The major objective of the project is to contribute to improving road transportation and trade facilitation along the Northern Corridor and to reduce traffic congestion between Kampala (Busega) and Mpigi,” Kagina added.

The project is set to take 36 months for construction and thereafter twelve months defects liability period from the commencement date.

Wang Lei the General Manager CCEC said, “We will try our best to complete this project in time”.

Kagina also said: “We expect the contractors to execute the project within time and to the specifications. We are going to supervise them closely so that they can work in the agreed period of time and use the funds provided because when a road is delayed, it becomes so expensive for us yet this is a loan that we Ugandans are to pay for.”

The loan will be paid within a period of 50 years, but the first decade is a grace period.
