DEATH

KASESE - The queen mother of Rwenzururu Christine Biira Mukirania has died.

She was pronounced dead by doctors Tuesday morning at Kilembe Hospital in Kasese municipality.

She has been battling cancer since early this year.

Biira is the mother of the embattled King of Rwenzururu, Charles Wesley Mumbere, and the state minister for agriculture, Christopher Kibanzanga.

According to a post by her grandson Moses Kibanzanga, Biira was declared dead at around 10:00am local time.

"It is very sad the queen mother has died," Kibanzanga posted on social media.

Biira has been instrumental in spearheading peace and reconciliation in the Rwenzori region since the 2016 clashes between the royal guards and the army.

David Baluku, a trader in Kasese town, has described Biira as a peace-loving person, who spent most of her time preaching peace.
