One killed, two injured at construction site

The victims were digging a foundation when the thin wall, which extended some 10 meters beneath the next building, caved in.

ACCIDENT            TRAGEDY
 
KAMPALA- One person was instantly killed and others survived with injuries when a wall collapsed at a construction site in Nakulabye, a Kampala city suburb.
 
The construction site which caved in on Wednesday evening seriously injured two other builders. It allegedly belongs to city businessman Paul Twesigye.
 
The victims were digging a foundation when the thin wall, which extended some 10 meters beneath the next building, caved in.
 
The dead were identified as Richard Tumusiime.  The injured were rushed to Mulago Hospital.

The two injured workers Robert Luyoga and Ivan Mukasa are admitted at Mulago Hospital.
 
By press time rescue teams were still working through the rubble to find any other people trapped beneath the wreckage.
 
According to the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Hassan Kihanda the wall caved in because it was not well retained he, however, added that investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
 
"The investigators will find out whether the construction guidelines were followed and whether the wall was retained according to the specifications," Kihanda said.
 
Despite calls for stricter building regulations, Uganda has seen a number of building collapse in which several people have been killed.
