May 20, 2019

Competing in the 125kg-Masters 40-44 years division (Raw Tested), Mubiru lifted a total of 555kgs in the deadlift, squat and bench press to emerge the best in his category.

Uganda's powerlifter Roy Mubiru has made Uganda proud once again by winning gold from the 29th World Powerlifting Alliance World Championship in Lutsk, Ukraine.

Competing in the 125kg-Masters 40-44 years division (Raw Tested), Mubiru lifted a total of 555kgs in the deadlift, squat and bench press (Full Power ) to emerge the best in his category.

He was the sole representative from Uganda and Africa at large in the championship that attracted lifters from 24 countries.

"I was the best in my category and my medal is unique because I battled in all the three lifts; I started with the squat, through the bench press and the deadlift with the best lift in each to emerge top," Mubiru stated.

"I can only return glory and honour to God, as I went through a lot, that I even got panicky at the last hours being a lonely athlete from Africa at the world cup."

American powerlifter Terry Harcleroad who in February visited Uganda for the RM Powerlifting Championship also competed in the Super Heavy Weight -Masters Division where he also scooped 4 gold medals in each of the lifts and another as the best in his age category.

After the Ukraine event, Mubiru will now take a break ahead of his next competitive event- the 2019 USA Powerlifting Baltimore Raw Full-Lift Open championship that will be held in Washington in October.

Mubiru was not short on motivation as he won silver from the 32nd Annual CAN-AM International Championship in Brattleboro city in the warm-up prior to the world meet.

President Museveni facilitated his preparations and travel to the event with  $8000 (sh29m) offer before.

Early this year, Mubiru was appointed as director of the American Powerlifting Association (APA) in Africa and was nominated as a member to the World Powerlifting Association (WPA) board.

He will head businesses of powerlifting at the continental level and sanction events on behalf of the world body.
