NARO awards biotechnology essay-writing winners

WAKISO - Students who participated in the 6th National Biotechnology Essay-writing Contest have been awarded.

The award ceremony took place at the National Crops Resources Research Institute, Namulonge in Wakiso district on Thursday.

Crisha Phionah Mbabazi, a student of Kololo SSS, won the secondary school category. She was presented with a tablet.

She said she was motivated to participate in the contest because of the role biotechnology can play in addressing some of the current problems affecting crops, including pests and diseases and pests.

Steven Marvin Nsubuga, a student of administrative science at Kyambogo University, reigned supreme in the tertiary institution category. He won himself a laptop.

The essay contest organized by Uganda Biosciences Information Centre (UBIC) was held under the theme: Modern Biosciences for more Nutritious Food and Industrial Development. 

Dr. Barbara Zawedde, the co-ordinator of UBIC, implored the students to invest in science of the future that will take Uganda forward.

As many as 146 submissions in the secondary school category were received from 24 secondary schools from across the country.

A total of 56 submissions were received from 14 universities.

Other students were awarded with cash. Zawedde said there were also internship opportunities at the research institute for the winners.
