Cyclone Idai: Govt delivers sh740m to Mozambique

Early this month, Idai hit Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, destroying thousands of structures

A delegation appointed by President Yoweri Museveni to deliver financial assistance to the Government of Mozambique on Thursday handed over $200,000 (about sh740m) to the leadership in Maputo.

The team of three people was led by state minister of defence in charge of veteran affairs, Bright Rwamirama.

The UPDF representative in Parliament, Gen. Ivan Koreta and Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bob Kabonero, were the other members that delivered Museveni’s message to the leadership of Mozambique.

Kabonero confirmed the development, saying they touched down in Maputo, Mozambique on Thursday to deliver Museveni’s “message of solidarity on behalf of Uganda to the people of Mozambique” following the devastation from Cyclone Idai.

The storm also killed 446 people in Mozambique, 259 in Zimbabwe and 56 in Malawi.

The cyclone which tore through the three Southern Africa countries also displaced over 500,000 people.

In his message, Museveni said: “I condole with our brothers and sisters in Southern Africa, who have been affected by Cyclone Idai, which has left thousands dead. Mozambique, the worst hit, has a special place in my heart, being the cradle of my revolutionary struggle. I will rally the region to offer support.”
