Abandoned baby rescued by police in Kagadi

Romeo Ojara, the Kagadi district Police Commander, said the abandoned child was discovered on Wednesday at around 7:00am in the compound of Charles Byaruhanga, the Vice-chairperson of Mugalike village in Kyenzige sub-county.

ABANDONED BABY

KAGADI - The Police in Kagadi have rescued a four-month-old baby girl discovered abandoned by an unknown woman in Mugalike Village, Kitema Parish, Kyenzige sub-county Kagadi district.

Romeo Ojara, the Kagadi district Police Commander, said the abandoned child was discovered on Wednesday at around 7:00am in the compound of Charles Byaruhanga, the Vice-chairperson of Mugalike village in Kyenzige sub-county.

He further disclosed that the particulars of the victim’s mother had not yet been established asserting that investigations in relation to such criminal act is on-going.

‘’The abandoned baby girl was brought to us by the Mugalike village vice-chairperson after he discovered her dumped in his compound in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. The Kagadi probation department in liaison with family and children protection unit at Kagadi Police station have secured a temporary court care order from Kagadi grade one magistrate, Simon Toloko and handed over the baby to a Non-Governmental Organization; Mabale Blessed International Ministries Babies home.’’ he said.

Ojara revealed that the police have registered a case of Child neglect and abandonment under case file number, SRB/263/2019 and said whoever has any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect should bring it to police in confidence.

Hedwig Mbazira, the Head of Mabale Blessed International Ministries Babies home who cares for over 50 children; orphans and abandoned, said the baby is in good health condition and that she has been given some food nutrients, milk and clothes but asks for more assistance from well-wishers and government to supplement her care for the babies.

Naome Nalwanga, in-charge family and children protection unit at Kagadi police station said the rescued baby girl is in good health condition. She appealed to married couples to always use relevant authorities in resolving family misunderstandings.

Charles Byaruhanga, who was the first to discover the abandoned baby in his compound said that this was the first time for such an incident to occur in his village. He attributed the heinous act to domestic violence and child marriages in the area.

He called upon leaders at all levels to sensitize the public about the value of round table discussions and the use of local leaders in resolving family wrangles.
