Kadaga blocks further debate on Miss Curvy

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga yesterday blocked further debate of the Miss Curvy in Parliament saying it's   human right and therefore people should be left to be.

"This is an issue of human rights. If you are fat, you are not allowed to participate in the miss world. Let's allow people be themselves," Kadaga ruled to applause.

She was reacting to MP Jovah Kamateka's complain about the status of the women that were involved in the project.

Kamateka who chairs the human rights committee of Parliament raising a point of inquiry complained that unlike Miss Uganda, the participants in Miss Curvy were old and some were even mothers.

"We have seen participants in Miss Uganda beauty Pageant such as Quiin Abenakyo are young and have their bodies intact, but some of the women we saw displayed on TV for miss curvy were mothers, we would like to promote the decency…….." Kamateka said before Mukono Municipality MP Betty Namboze cut her shot by raising a point of order.

"Women  have got problems and issues and in this case, some people came up with that idea of miss curvy.  Parliament last month, discussed it and the deputy speaker ruled on the matter.

Today they honoured Parliament and presented a petition to you, presented everything and out of courtesy, you agreed to meet them." Namboze said.

Adding that, "Is Hon. Jovah right to start doubting your capacity and start insinuating that you took a bad decision to meet them and that we, mothers are not beautiful?"   

Early in the day, contestants and organisers of Miss Curvy pageant presented a petition to Kadaga to correct what they said was the misconception that the pageant was about sex.

This was after the Kadaga on Monday protested the use of women bodies to promote tourism.
