DIASPORA - British actor Daniel Kaluuya who is of Ugandan origin is set to star in a new film as his fame continues to rise.

According to reports, Kaluuya will star as Fred Hampton in the film Jesus Was My Homeboy.

The film is a biopic of Fred Hampton, an African-American activist and revolutionary, who was assassinated on December 4, 1969 in the US. Then aged 21, Hampton was reportedly killed after a raid on a political rally by FBI and the Chicago Police Department.

In the film, Kaluuya will be depicted as Hampton, the respected activist who eventually rose to become the Illinois head of the Black Panther Party before his death.

The deal will no doubt add to the 27-year-old's steep-rising stardom that has seen him thrive in the film industry over the last few years despite his humble beginnings.

Born in London to Damalie Namusoke and Stephen Kaluuya, Kaluuya's acting career started as a teenager and he honed his craft in theatres, and through acting parts in British television shows.

Many people, especially in Uganda, remember him for his role in Black Panther, but he has stared in more films such as Get Out, Sucker Punch and British television series Skins.
