Hydroponic farming the solution urban farming

New Vision's Andrew Masinde:

Talk of farming and one thinks of a huge chunk of land.

But at the Harvest Money Expo, farmers are being trained on how to grow crops without requiring soil - a technique called hydroponic farming, which involves using a watery solution of mineral nutrients.

Cathy Bazire from Agromax Uganda Limited, one of the exhibitors at the expo, says that the key to plant growth is a variety of mineral nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

She says if you add these necessary mineral nutrients to a plant's water supply, you no longer need soil for the plant to grow. Just about any plant can be grown with hydroponics.

"You can use vast networks of plastic pipes with holes for plants. The pipes supply mineral nutrients in a watery solution to the plant's root systems.

Bazire says hydroponics has many benefits in the modern world. In areas where good soil is scarce, the technique allows residents to grow fresh food. Since hydroponic farms can be set up indoors, fresh food can be grown all year long.

"Through this technique, farmers can grow many vegetables at a low cost," she says, adding that each plant requires up to two litres of water per day. This water should be slightly acidic, with a pH of 5.8.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is a method of growing plants without soil by using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent.

Kisamba Mugerwa praises Vision Group expo

New Vision's Andrew Masinde:

Former agriculture minister Dr. Kisamba Mugerwa advised people attending the Harvest Money Expo not to just move around aimlessly, but instead endeavour to concentrate on the areas of agriculture they are interested in.

While touring stalls at the farming exhibition, he said many times some people come for expos but leave without learning anything - because they lack focus.

"Since there is something everyone is interested in, look for that specific type of farming and give it time," said Kisamba Mugerwa.

On the biggest agricultural exhibition on the land, he said this is a one-stop centre of a diversity of knowledge. The expo has training sessions, attending by scores of people at a time in various rooms throughout the day.

"To me this is good and I think the private sector is doing very well together with Vision Group. It should be emulated, even at a lower level, because not everybody can come here. Hence, it should be elevated to regions for other Ugandans to also access."

According to Mugerwa, farming is a business and it gives great pleasure touring the stalls and "all you see are people who are turning farming into business".

And his parting shot: "Focus on knowledge and give it time."

  Busy day of harvesting knowledge

It's a breezy morning here at Namboole Stadium as the clouds gather for what appears to be a looming downpour.

But then, our weather can be deceptive. The skies could clear any time soon.

Harvesting from the Harvest Money Expo

Now here is what they called harvesting from the very source.

The exhibition is an illustration of just how hungry people are for knowledge. And most of tthem are taking with them home physical evidence of their expo experience. Have a look:
