Former University Football League champions, Makerere University heightened their hopes of making a comeback to the competition when they edged Kampala International University 1-0 on Monday afternoon at the Makerere sports grounds in the first leg of their preliminary round knockout tie.

Bonga John Paul's goal in the 35th minute proved to be the difference between the two sides after he pounced on a through pass from Edward Katende.

If MAK defeats KIU in the second leg on Wednesday afternoon, they will secure a group stage berth for the first time since the 2017 season following their suspension from last year's competition for cases of indiscipline at Busitema University.

MAK also won the inaugural UFL competition in 2012.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Kabale University as they host Nkumba this afternoon in a bid to book a place in the competition for the first time.
