Atamba won Uganda’s only gold medal after beating the world number-one Ahris Sumariyanto of Chinese Taipei in the men’s singles at the inaugural edition in Indonesia in 2017.

Uganda's seed-one, Onesmus Atamba is expected to lead the national woodball team in search OF victory at the Beach Woodball World Cup starting May 25-31 at Spennah beach, Entebbe.

Atamba won Uganda's only gold medal after beating the world number-one Ahris Sumariyanto of Chinese Taipei in the men's singles at the inaugural edition in Indonesia in 2017.

His expertise is all that Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) needs to inspire others as the national team prepares to battle participants from over 35 countries at the weeklong event.

The Beach World Cup is the biggest event on the UWbF calendar and according to the local body president Mark Kayongo, they believe Uganda can win all the gold medals at the biennial event if they prepare accordingly.

"We are the only African country in the contest and therefore we expect to have a stiff challenge from the rest. But because we are the host, we would like to put up a stiff competition so as to avoid the shame," Kayongo said.

"But the only way we can avoid the shame is by preparing our team very well," he added.

Kayongo made the remarks at the annual general assembly at the weekend at their office in Mengo.

He added that the Beach World Cup will be held concurrently with the Uganda International Open.

"Only players on the national team will take part in the World Cup, while the Uganda international is open to all individuals," he noted.

The national team trials will be held on March 10 and 24 and thereafter, the final 12 players will be selected to enter camp.

At the same meeting, David Katende the National Council of Sports (NCS) official assured to extend financial support to UWbF this season.
