“When you are slopping here and happen to meet a big vehicle, you have to stop. The road is very narrow and has big trenches on both sides,” an eyewitness said.

ACCIDENT  MBARARA   CYCLIST

Shock and grief rocked residents of Kiswahili suburb in Mbarara town on Thursday afternoon when a boda boda cyclist, who was carrying three passengers, rammed into a moving tipper truck, killing two people on the spot.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police mouthpiece, said the rider and a juvenile of about 10 years died on spot whereas other two women were rushed to Mbarara regional referral hospital in critical conditions.

He mentioned that the accident happened near Mbarara Municipal Primary School on the lane connecting Lugazi Road. He says the rider had three passengers and a bunch of matooke.

"Both the bodaboda and the tipper truck were sloping down, when the cyclist failed to break, ramming into the lorry. The juvenile, who was in front and the rider hit their heads on the tipper truck," said Kasasira.

Kasasira said they had not yet ascertained the whereabouts of the tipper truck since it sped off after the accident.

Prosper Kabagambe, one of the eyewitnesses, says if the road was wide enough, the boda boda rider would have gotten a chance to pass the lorry. "We saw him struggling with the motorcycle as he sloped down the road."

Francis Agaba, also a boda boda rider, called upon the municipal leaders to enlarge the road to avoid such accidents. "You see when you are slopping here and happen to meet a big vehicle, you have to stop. The road is very narrow and has big trenches on both sides," he said.
