Background for the SRHR-Umbrella grant
Uganda is experiencing significant unmet need for Sexual and Reproductive health and Rights (SRHR) services across all age groups. This unmet demand for HIV and SRHR services is largely as a result of the age structure of the population who are predominantly young (10-24) comprising 48% of the total population and 78% below 30 years. The major SRHR challenges faced include; limited access to SRHR information and services, high unmet need for contraceptives, high STI infections, gender inequality, socio cultural and harmful traditional practices. Meanwhile HIV remains an important public health problem, the prevalence varies by sex, geographical area, key and vulnerable populations (13% for men who have sex with men (MSM) and 35% for sex workers (SWs), disproportionately distributed amongst males (4.7%) and females (7.6%). Adolescent girls (3%) aged 15-19 live with HIV and this figure doubles by the time they reach 24 years. The Uganda Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Umbrella (SRHRUmbrella) is a five year program and now in its third year implemented by CHAU, working with IHAA in Brighton, UK through a grant from the Embassy of Sweden in Uganda.
