Woman charged with procuring a miscarriage

KAMPALA- A 25-year-old woman, working in Parliament as a cleaner, has been charged and remanded to Luzira prison for allegedly procuring a miscarriage with the help of her sister within the Parliamentary premises.

While appearing before the City Hall Court on Wednesday, the accused persons denied the charges and were remanded till September 27, when they are expected to appear before the same court for a hearing.

Prosecution alleges that while at development house number 3.12 in Kampala district, Evas Kyasiimire, with intent to procure her own miscarriage, unlawfully administered local herbs or any noxious substance and procured a miscarriage.

Her sister, Phionah Natumanya is also accused of conspiring with her to commit a felony. It is alleged that on September 1, 2018,  they conspired to procure the miscarriage.

Kyasiimire is a resident of Mwitanzigye East Village, Kisiita Sub-County in Kakumiro district while Natumanya is a resident of Kisasizi Zone in Makindye division.

The two, who appeared before the court's grade one magistrate, Patrick Talisuna, face two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to Section 390 of the Penal Code and procuring a miscarriage contrary to Section 142 of the Penal Code.

Prosecution states that on September 1, 2018 at Parliament, the sisters after allegedly procuring a miscarriage, threw the fetous in the dust bin where it was discovered by another cleaner who showed it to parliamentary security.

A security search led to the arrest of Kyasimire who had travelled all the way from Kakumiro district to pay Natumanya a visit at parliament.

The duo was found hiding at Parliament’s Development House room 3:12 with Kyasimire profusely bleeding.
