The Chinese embassy in Uganda has responded to allegations published in the media this weekend, about reports of harrassment of Ugandans and Nigerians in China.

The embassy says those were isolated cases by some local hotels and that the government has taken action against such practices, saying they cannot impact on the good relationship between the Chinese and Africans.

The Embassy has noted that the article “China cracks down on Ugandans, Nigerians” has been in the media this weekend.

According to the knowledge of the Embassy, the situation that some Africans including Ugandans were refused to check into budget hotels in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China was purely resulted from the self-made decisions of isolated hotels.

Local government has instructed the involved hotels to stop the improper practices immediately and gave grave criticisms and education to these hotels. At present, there is no hotel in Guangzhou which refuses to accommodate Africans.

Days ago, Provincial officials of Guangdong briefed the latest situation to the Consul-Generals of Uganda and Nigeria in Guangzhou and said that prompt measures had been taken to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The Consul-Generals agreed that Chinese and African peoples are good brothers and the isolated cases of improper practise by some hotels should not impact the good relationship between us.

China-Uganda friendship is profound with a long history. In recent years, the comprehensive bilateral relations have been in a robust momentum, with tangible achievements in infrastructure, investment, industrialization and frequent people-to-people exchanges.

There are now above 10,000 Ugandans visiting China every year, which testifies the close relations between China and Uganda.
