Three killed, two Canadians sustain injuries in Lugazi accident

ACCIDENT

LUGAZI - Three people died on spot in an accident while two Canadian nationals and a five year-old boy sustained severe injuries.

The Wednesday accident which occurred around Kitega village near Lugazi town along the Jinja - Kampala highway involved a truck which rammed into a private car and killed three people.

According to reports, passangers in the private car were on their way to Jinja from Entebbe airport after picking up Canadians nationals who work with a Non government organisation, His Hope Uganda that is based in Bugembe, Jinja district.

Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson confirmed the accident and said the truck driver identified as Joseph Kimtai, a Kenyan national lost control and rammed into the land cruiser sweeping off its top roof before it hit a saloon car and a motorcycle that had been parked by the road side.

Eyewitnesses said they had to cut the wreckage to retrieve the bodies.

Among the deceased was the driver, only identified as Ssemalulu, a woman, Nakyeyune and an unidentified child.

The Canadians are Anna Burns and Kim Toyota while the five year-old boy is Jordan Mugisha.

The Canadians were able to recieve first Aid from Kawolo hospital and later  transferred to Nsambya hospital.

Butoto said police had arrested Kamtai from his hospital bed at Kawolo and once he recovers, police will charge him with reckless driving and causing deaths.

The wreckage were towed to Lugazi central police station.
