New Vision has learnt that a Ugandan senior Police office has died on his way back home from the US.

Commissioner Makmot Okello is said to have died in transit in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday.

Police deputy spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the development.

Okello, who was attached to the internal affairs ministry, was in charge of small firearms.

He has been in charge of private security organisations and firearms.

The internal affairs and foreign affairs ministries are working with the Ugandan embassy in UAE to have the fallen Police officer's body flown back home.

Before moving to the ministry, Okello was at the Police headquarters in Kampala between April 2009 and 2010. There, he supervied all private security organisations in the country.

The control of firearms and the vetting of individuals who applied for civilian firearms was also under his eye.

Earlier, he had served as the commandant of the Anti-stock Theft Unit in Katakwi district in the eastern part of the country.

The unit was tasked with fighting cattle rustlers and disarming them.

Okello was the regional police commander for West Nile from 2006 until 2007.
