Musician Geoffrey Oryema dead

He has been living in Paris, France and is largely known for his highly successful song, Land of Anaka from his 1991 album.

KAMPALA - Internationally renowned Ugandan, World Music artiste, Geoffrey Oryema is dead. He passed on at the age of 65. 
 
The news of Oryema's death was broken on Friday evening by another Ugandan artiste, Joel Sebunjo.
 
Sebunjo wrote: "Sad news for Ugandan music .. African music.. World music. The legend, Geoffrey Oryema has passed on! What a tragedy."
 
The cause of Oryema's death is not yet known. Oryema has been living in Paris, France. He is largely known for a highly successful song; Land of Anaka from his 1991 album.
 
Oryema earned his global reputation after the release of his second album, Beat the Border in 1993. He has performed on various big international music stages across the world.
 
In 1977, after the murder of his father, Wilson Erinayo Oryema, who was a cabinet minister in the government of Amin, Oryema fled to exile, where he has been since.
 
At the age of 24, Oryema was smuggled across the Ugandan border in a car trunk.
 
He told this story to New Vision in November 2016 after his return to Uganda, 34 years later. He held a concert then that thrilled his fans.
 
Several music lovers have sent their condolence messages, with some taking to social media to mourn the legendary musician.
