Kiryandongo accident: Death toll rises to 23

On Friday at around 8:00pm, a Gaaga Bus registration number UAK 562L from Lira to Kampala was involved in an accident with a tractor registration number UAU 872M and a trailer loaded with crates of beer registration number UAT 088J / UAT 321M.

 

Another of the GaaGaa bus victims has passed on from Nsambya hospital where he was admitted in serious condition with multiple fractures.

Jackson Agona, 27, a laboratory assistant who worked with Chem-Labs Limited breathed his last at  7:40pm on Monday, according to his sister only identified as Evelyn.

This now brings the number of the dead from the Friday accident to 23 with 14 injured being treated at Nsambya Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital.

The Government, on Sunday, declared three days of mourning for the victims of the tragic incident.

The wreckage of the bus in which 22 people died

President Yoweri Museveni in a message delivered by the Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda, offered sh5m to each of the families of the deceased and sh3m to each of the families of the injured. The money was delivered by State House Comptroller Lucy Nakyobe.

The bus reportedly hit the tractor before it rolled and collided with the oncoming lorry.

The accident happened at Nanda village, in Nyamasha parish, Mutunda sub-county, Kiryandongo district.

In January this year, two foreign nationals were killed and one critically injured in a road accident in Ayuda village Diima parish Kiryandongo district on the Kampala -Gulu highway.
