Following the road accident in Kiryandongo that claimed 22 lives and left scores injured, the Government has declared three days of national morning starting today (Sunday).

The accident happened at around 8:00pm on Friday evening when a Kampala-bound Gaaga bus rammed into a moving tractor that had no lights and reflector. The bus lost control and collided with an oncoming trailer loaded with alcohol.

In the directive made by President Yoweri Museveni and delivered in a statement on Sunday by the Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, the Government will contribute sh5m for every victim to the families that lost loved ones, to assist in burial arrangements.

During the three days of mourning, all flags on public buildings will flay at half mast.

The Government will also contribute sh3m per person to those who were seriously injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment.

In the statement, an appeal was made to motorists to drive carefully and passengers were urged to prevail over errant drivers even in the absence of traffic Police.

“The traffic Police must step up vigilance on the roads, especially ensuring that vehicles that are not roadworthy are not on the roads. Speed limits must also be observed,” the statement read.
