The 11-year-old primary six St Marcelino Academy Matugga player will be the underdog.

Chess player Maria Nakanyike will in September become the first minor to compete in qualifies to represent the country in the chess Olympiad in Batumi Georgia from September 23 to October 7.

The 11-year-old primary six St Marcelino Academy Matugga player will be the underdog, according to some players, but the seasoned senior players who have had previous games with the prodigy will treat her with respect.

Maria Nakanyike has made several surprises over the board playing against strong female players. Her coach Augustine Buwule says Maria is not under any pressure to qualify and represent the country, but that it is up to the senior players to show that they are still good enough to carry Uganda's flag high.

Maria is currently helping the girls' team for Spring Field High School Matugga in preparation for the upcoming national schools chess championship (Father Grimes) due to take place at Seeta High School main campus from May 5-10.
