KAMPALA- The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) over the weekend seized 1.7 tonnes of assorted items of cosmetics worth sh300m. The items belonged to Sure Deal Beauty Centre for illegally using the UNBS quality mark.

The cosmetics were seized on Friday at the Sure Deal Beauty Centre office in Kampala. The UNBS team also seized a number of assorted products at the ongoing back-to-school Guide and Expo at constitutional square.

The seized products would have had adverse health effects on more than 10,000 households as result of using poor quality ingredients.

The UNBS market surveillance team carried out various inspections at the Sure Deal outlets. The team discovered that various cosmetics manufactured by the company had the UNBS quality mark despite having not been certified.

The team also confiscated skin lightening cosmetics that contain hydroquinone, which various studies have confirmed to have adverse effects on human heath such as damage to internal organs like the liver.

“Previous tests carried out by UNBS on some Sure Deal products confirmed that the products contain hydroquinone which is a banned substance used in cosmetics for skin lightening,” Godwin Muhwezi, the UNBS public relations officer, said.

He noted that the UNBS legal team and the criminal investigations department have initiated legal proceedings against the company and its directors.
