Five people perished and seven people sustained serious injuries when a Prado car from Gulu had a head-on collision with a bus belonging to the HMK Company from Kampala heading to Gulu.

The 11:00AM fatal road crash occurred near Kafu on Kiryandongo side, about 165km along the Gulu-Kampala Highway Friday morning.

The HMK bus Turn-man, Roger Abdul, who was an eye-witness said the bus over-turned after it rammed into a speeding Prado near Kafu Bridge. The bus registration number is UAQ 045Q, was heading to Gulu from Kampala, while the Prado was coming from the opposite direction.

Abdul said the five people aboard the Prado died instantly and only one person in it managed to survive with serious injuries and was rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital in a critical condition. The bodies of the dead were taken to Kiryandongo Hospital mortuary.

Abdul said he did not readily ascertain the registration of the Prado, but another source quoted the number plate as being. The Prado, rehgistration number UAY 727 Q was damaged beyond repair.

A Police Traffic officer from Kiryandongo who identified himself only as James said the police had not yet ascertained the details of the accident by press time. He said they were still trying to investigate the cause of the accident.

The Lake Albert Police Public Relations Officer, Isaac Hakiza said he was yet to get details of the accident from the traffic officers who had reportedly rushed to the scene.

This brings to four the number of road accidents on the northern Uganda and West Nile routes in less than two weeks as the Christmas festivities approach.

Earlier this week there was an accident involving a Gaagaa bus along the Karuma-Pakwach and a KKT Bus from Kampala to Arua highway. The third one was at around Keyo along the Gulu-Atiak highway in which a bus reportedly skidded of the road and knocked dead a motor-cycle rider.

The Acwa River Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Patrick Jimmy Okema had earlier on cautioned road users, especially buses, truck drivers and motor-cyclists to be conscious and observe traffic rules and regulations to avoid or minimize accidents on the roads.

He said the roads are likely to be congested especially during the Christmas period.
