Former Presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye has advised people to always go for medical checkups to avoid unnecessary loss of life.

“Most of the cancers are treatable, but need early diagnosis. Especially people who have clocked the age of 60 should go for medical examinations to check their internal organs,” Bresigye said.

Besigye on Sunday paid tribute to the fallen Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart, Melisa Aryokot, popularly known as Imat Adaa at her home in Tesobar in Lira Municipality.

Aryokot lost the battle to cancer on Thursday at Lira Referral Hospital, where she had been admitted under the palliative care unit. She died aged 71.

“It is unfortunate that we lost a strong supporter of the party, an exceptional woman in leadership who was committed to bring change, a change that would see Uganda a country that gives all her citizens same treatment. We shall dearly miss Imat Adaa”.

He added: “I was shocked to hear that my friend, my mother and advisor Imat Adaa was diagnosed with cancer, which is uncontrollable. The news really disturbed me.”

In 2016, when Besigye was under house arrest, Aryokot led the delegation of FDC supporters from northern Uganda, who went and visited him in Kasangati.

According the deceased's brother, Musa Ejuku, the body will be taken to ST. Jonan Luwum Church of Uganda in Lira for a requiem mass and later transported to Orungu sub-county in Amuria district, where the burial will take place on Wednesday.
