Hundreds of people from Acholi sub-region and beyond have turned up to commemorate the  Acholi Cultural Festival, the first of its kind, at the Kaunda Grounds in Gulu municipality.

The festival that will last for three days, started today afternoon and will end on Saturday. Over 50 dancing groups from all over the eight districts of Acholiland have turned up for the event. The Acholi culture boasts of over 50 dances, including the popular Laraka Raka (courtship dance), dingi dingi, Otole (war dance), Acut, Bwola (dance of the king), Ajere, Apiti, Aguma, Nanga, Lakubu kubu and 55 cultural foods - boo, malakwang, coroko, lackacka, ngoo, olel, among others.

Ambrose Ola, the prime minister of Ker Kwaro Acholi, while giving his remarks during the opening ceremony, said the festival was part of the resolution passed by Acholi leaders in February this year.

Ola added that the leaders noted the declining culture among the Acholi people and, therefore, there was need to have an annual festival that would bring people together and revive the lost cultural values.

The festival is running under the theme: Kwero Deyo pa Acholi (celebrating the beauty of the Acholi people).
