A 40-year-old peasant farmer is on the run after allegedly chopping his wife into pieces. The incident happened this morning.

Constantine Isabirye, a resident of Bukose village, Nabitende, in Iganga district is said to have gone into a jealous rage after suspecting his wife Farida Namukose of being unfaithful.

According to Sande Kyotaite, also a resident of the area, the couple had gone to attend to their maize garden in the morning, when they got into a heated argument.

Isabirye reportedly picked a hoe and hit his wife on the head, before chopping her up with a machete (panga).

Kyotaite said Isabirye fled after committing the crime, leaving his wife in a pool of blood.

The LC1 vice-chairman of Bukose village, Patrick Nabongho, said Isabirye had always accused Namukose of having an affair with her ex boyfriend, a prominent businessman in Iganga Municipality.

Nabongho said Namukose used to be married to her ex and the couple produced two children, before she met Isabirye.

"Isabirye always got annoyed whenever this man came to check on his children while driving an expensive car," he said.

Nabongho said the father of the children would live behind a huge some of money to cater for the needs of his children, which caused Isabirye insecurities.

By press time, the body of the deceased was still lying at the Iganga Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.

The Iganga district police commander, Nassibu Nditta, said they have mounted a search for the accused. And that he faces murder charges.

Nditta cautioned locals against taking the law into their hands.

"Always seek counselling in case you have grievances in your homes. It saves everyone a lot of trouble," he said.

He expressed concern over the increase in the number of cases involving domestic violence in the district.

He said 12 people have been killed since the start of the year as a result of domestic violence.
