Police in Tororo have destroyed processed marijuana worth millions of shillings. The drugs were loaded on cargo trucks destined to Kenya.

The officer in charge of anti narcotic drugs at the Police headquarters in Kampala, Benon Muhwezi, said the drugs were intercepted along Tororo-Busia road as it was being taken to Kenya, a major consumer.

He said the drugs were intercepted during the Operation Fika Salama programme (road safety) of the Police.

Muhwezi noted that narcotic drugs are the major causes of rising cases of mental illnesses among youth.

He said those involved in the business take advantage of the porous borders to cross over with the drugs to Kenya. He said they have been able to spot their illegal routes.

Muhwezi said marijuana is being grown mainly in areas bordering Kenya, where it is grown in large plantations, with people claiming it is used to treat livestock and poultry.

Muhwezi identified the major growing areas as Mella sub-county in Tororo district, Dabani, Masinya, Lumino and Majanji in Busia district.

He challenged local leaders and members of the public to volunteer information to Police on where the crop is being cultivated, so they can take action.
