Over 700 staff of Kyambogo University who went on strike two weeks ago paralyzing business at the institution have made a U-turn and returned to work.

The decision to call off the strike was announced by their chairman Dr. Grace Lubaale under their umbrella Kyambogo University Academic staff Association (KYUSA).

Lubaale told Saturday Vision that not all their demands have been met, but they have made a decision to return to work because the university has expressed commitment to clear the outstanding debt and improve welfare of the staff.

"They paid January and February up to 90%. They have also given us an agreeable schedule of paying the March, April, May and June balances," Lubaale said, adding that the university has also pledged to pay allowances owed to them since 2014.

"Right now as you speak to me, I am in the field supervising students," he noted.

The strike followed a failure by the university to clear salaries and allowances accumulated over a period of six months.

The university blamed the delays on the IFMS (Integrated Financial Management System), however, this was later denied by officials from the finance ministry.

Saturday Vision has learnt that the strike had left over 5,000 students now participating in internship activities stranded, with their supervisors making no shows at several centres in the country.
